#1 – Lemons Clean Your Garbage Disposal
False! This is probably one of the most common plumbing myths out there. Everyone is under the impression that chopping up some citrus fruit in the garbage disposal makes it smell fresh and lemony. Well, it does make it smell lemony… for the five or six seconds it takes to grind up the lemon. But it doesn’t “clean” anything. In fact, the citric acid, which is the “cleaning agent” in citrus, can actually cause corrosion on the metal inside the disposal.
Instead of using lemons to clean your disposal, fill your sink with cold soapy water. Throw in a tray of ice cubes. Pull the stopper and turn on your disposal. Doing that every week or two will keep your disposal about as clean as it is going to be without doing any damage.
#2 – “In Tank” Cleaners Make Cleaning the Toilet Easy
You know what cleaners we’re talking about. The stick-on or drop-in tabs that go either in the bowl or tank of your toilet that slowly dissolve for about a month. The idea being, the bleach that’s slowly being released is keeping your bowl clean. It’s not. The bleach isn’t cleaning the porcelain, it’s just bleaching the scum that’s still building up in your bowl. Left untouched, the scum will build up until it ruins your toilet.
The better way to keep the parts of your tank clean that you can’t reach is to pour half a cup of distilled white vinegar down the overflow tube in the back of the tank once a week.
#3 – As Long As Things Keep Going Down My Drain, It Isn’t Getting Clogged
As long as water and other things are successfully flowing down your drain, you have no fear of clogs, right? Wrong. Drains don’t work on the whole “out of sight out of mind” concept. They are more like the arteries of a person with high cholesterol. Even though you can’t see them, there are things coating and sticking inside your pipes that are going to cause clogs later. Namely oils and starches.
Now, we’re not just talking about kitchen grease. Even the oils that are in soaps, stick to the inside of drain pipes. As do things like rice and pasta. You’re thinking, “Rice and pasta?” Yes. Rice, pasta and other starches turn into sugar when they mix with water. In your drain pipes, they act like caramel.
You can avoid clogs by making sure all of your drains are used properly. Make sure you’re putting safe things in your garbage disposal. You could even invest in a hair catcher to go over your shower drain to stop hair from clogging up your pipes later. Finally, invest in enzymatic treatments. Okay, this is a bit of a come on, since we sell the treatments, but they really are the best way to keep your drains clean. The enzymes eat the grease and starches without eating your pipes, the way acid based treatments do.
#4 – You Can Clean Plumbing Fixtures With Hand Soap
If you wash your hands in soap and water, you can wash your plumbing fixtures with it too, right? Actually, no you can’t. When you wash your hands and get hand soap on the faucet or handles, you’re going to want to take an 5 extra seconds and wipe it off. Hand soap and water can actually cause some fixtures to peel and bubble. This myth is extra important because if your fixtures get damaged or destroyed because of soapy water contact, almost all warranties are voided.
#5 – Plumbing Requires No Maintenance
Just because your plumbing looks solid as steel, doesn’t mean it doesn’t need love to. Plumbing pipes, valves and fixtures work day in and day out moving corrosive chemicals in and out of your home. Over time, they will corrode, rot, and break. Without proper maintenance, they will do this a lot sooner. Make sure you are using all your fixtures regularly. If you have a hose bib or sink you almost never use, make sure you go out and run it once and awhile to clear it out. If you have hard water, either invest in a water softener (it really is cheaper than not having one) or be sure to clean the mineral deposits off your fixtures with distilled vinegar. Don’t let them build up, as they will just sit their, reacting with the metal of you pipes, accelerating deterioration.
TOP 5 MYTHS ABOUT YOUR PLUMBING
It’s hard to tell, and we probably prefer it that way, but the average home has a mass of plastic pipes, metal pipes and components running through walls, into kitchens and bathrooms. These systems are professionally installed to last, but problems do arise, parts break down and it’s time to call out a plumber.
1. Dripping Faucet
This may not be the most serious problem, but water is being lost down the drain as it leaks from the faucet, and the annoyance factor is more than enough reason to want it fixed. The constant dripping is caused by a faulty washer within the faucet mechanism. The washer needs to be replaced if it’s damaged. It could, of course, not be seated correctly, but the common option is to replace it anyway.
2. Low water pressure
The water pressure could be low across the neighborhood, in which case the problem is with the water authority and not the home. The main water line should definitely be checked for kinks and dirty deposits, common in areas with hard water. The solution may be as simple as clearing the main water supply, or could lead to the necessary installation of a pressure booster.
3. Sinks drain slowly
Unfortunately, this problem occurs often, and it is prone to repeat. Debris and rotten matter has most likely built up in the drainpipe. Homes with waste disposal units don’t suffer from this complaint as much as other homes since the disposal chews up matter to a fine size, but it still happens, and the pipe has to be cleared. Shop bought cleaners are not the best solution. Call in the plumber.
4. Running Toilet
The toilet mechanism is built of plastic and metal linkages, and a flotation device. Unfortunately, even the best materials wear out. Metal links break or fracture. The solution may be as simple as tightening the threads of the mechanism, adjusting the level of the float, or as time consuming as replacing the entire tank mechanism.
5. Faulty Garbage Disposal
They tear up garbage into tiny pieces, gobbling and sending the waste down the disposal pipe, but when the unit does go wrong, it can cause nasty smells as leftover food rots and dirty water backs up. The potentially dangerous and definitely messy equipment has both mechanical and electrical components, and a professional plumber should be called to clear the blockage and effect repairs.
